Arenus Sponsors NCSU Horse Nutrition Short Course for Veterinarians

Kenneth Kopp, DVM Joins Experts on Role of Nutrition, Supplements, Diet Trends

St. Charles, MO—December 6, 2011—Arenus, the Novus International, Inc. is proud to sponsor the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Horse Nutrition Short Course for Veterinarians, January 28-29, 2012, at the Brownstone Hotel Conference Center in Raleigh, NC, in coordination with NCSU Extension Horse Husbandry, Animal Science Department, and NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine.
Arenus Technical Service Veterinarian, Kenneth Kopp, DVM, of St. Charles, MO, is among the featured lecturers, which includes equine practitioners and a five-member panel representing the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Kopp has a long career in equine practice and the equine nutrition industry.
The two-day Nutrition Short Course will open on Saturday morning with Dr. Kopp joining a discussion with Canton, GA equine practitioner, Kenneth Marcella, DVM, on The Role of Nutrition Consulting in Equine Practice.  Later that afternoon, Dr. Kopp will lead a presentation on The Roles of Nutritional and Dietary Health Supplements in Equine Nutrition.
“Nutrition influences every cell of the body,” said Dr. Kopp.  “A lot can be done for equine care that can be influenced by nutrition.  The goal of this Short Course is to give veterinarians practical tools to use in their patient care.  It’s about giving vets the most current information, and to present real case studies, that we can walk through, and show them how to approach such cases with nutritional support.  To quote the ‘father of medicine,’ Hippocrates, ‘Let food be your medicine, and medicine your food.”
Sunday morning, Dr. Kopp will moderate Case Studies and Condition-Specific Nutritional Discussion, featuring the NCSU College of Veterinary Medicine Professor of Equine Surgery, Anthony Blikslager DVM, PhD, DACVS; Asst. Professor Shannon Pratt-Phillips PhD; Professor of Equine Medicine Sam Jones, DVM, PhD, DACVIM; Assoc. Professor Paul Siciliano PhD; and Dr. Marcella.
“Dr. Blikslager is a foremost expert on the equine gastrointestinal tract. In 2010 at the AAEP convention in Baltimore, we began talking about the need to offer more continued education in equine nutrition.  The seed was planted then, more than a year ago, to develop this Short Course,” said Dr. Kopp.  “Veterinarians are key to a collaborative effort in caring for our equine patients, and optimizing nutrition should be part of that.”
Other topics featured during the Nutrition Short Course include Feed and Forage Analysis, New Trends for Equine Diets, case presentations on Chronic Colic, Metabolic Diseases, Training Producers to Use Body Condition Scoring and Weight Determination, and Updates on Recent Horse Nutrition Advances.
